HomeThe official website of the original 18 Foot Skiff Class. To promote new skiffs, original skiffs, historical skiffs and innovation. 18 Foot Skiffs are amongst the most exciting sailboats ever conceived. They are typically faster than multi-million dollar yachts up to five times their length. They're faster than 99.99% of any sailboats ever made. They sail most Saturday's and Sunday's on Sydney harbour and elsewhere around the globe. The 18 Foot Skiff Class was born in the ninteeth century to satisfy need for a boat which was within the means of the "average man" and provide exciting racing for the public. Well before television it was followed and punted upon by hundreds of thousands. The overall aim of the NSW 18 Skiff Class Association (NSW18) is to foster open design and competition of sailing craft where the principle limitations are that it has a single hull and beam not exceeding 18 feet. Spars and overhangs are unrestricted. Races are scored for handicapped and elapsed times. The Mark Foy system is used which provides incredible finishes that rewards skill, ne and old in the fleet. 18 Foot Skiffs are known as Flying 18's because they leap out and fly over the water. They were flying 12 years before the success of the Wright brothers and 37 years before Uffa Fox "introduced" planing! |
